A young woman named Savannah Phillips was no stranger to flying. For the past three weeks, she had spent almost as much time in the air as on the ground – or so it felt. While on one flight, everything was going perfectly. She had gotten there early, found a comfortable seat, and realized that the flight attendants were extremely kind.

But one thing was off, and it was very important – the man she was sitting next to was extremely insulting. As she was trapped in the plane thousands of feet above the ground, the man relentless abused her with his words, and she had no choice but to take it. Or so she thought.

Savannah, 32, decided to share her story on Facebook, not just because she endured unthinkable abuse on the flight, but because her story had a positive spin. A stranger came and saved her from the tongue thrashing.

The ordeal started after Savannah’s flight was canceled due to storms and she was moved to an earlier departure. Because the Chicago flight was fully booked, she didn’t get a chance to pick a seat.

“I’m not the biggest person on the airplane, but I’m not the smallest. My worst nightmare is someone being uncomfortable because they have to sit next to me.”

Savannah experienced a lot of anxiety when she could not choose her seat, and she feared the person next to her would not like her. But when she saw she was seated next to a man in his 60s wearing yellow sunglasses, she felt a flood of relief. He jumped up and allowed her to pass. And he seemed to be the perfect coach-class neighbors. She couldn’t have been more wrong.

As the flight attendants urged everyone to put away their phones, the man next to her took out his phone and started texting insults about Savannah. Because his phone was so close and his font was huge, she could not help but read the hateful messages.

“He proceeded to text someone that he was sitting next to ‘a smelly fatty.’”

Savannah’s worst fears had come to life. And she was brought to tears. Because she is a new mom still carrying around pregnant weight, she has negative thoughts about the way she looks every day

“Before I knew it, I could feel hot, salty tears coming down my face. I sat and cried silently, hoping this guy didn’t try to make small talk, because I didn’t trust how I would react and I didn’t want to get kicked off the plane. I was so hurt. The pilot came overhead and said there would be a 30-minute delay before he could take off. Great. Just more time I would have to sit next to this creep.”

Suddenly the passenger behind the “creep” spoke up. He asked the man to switch seats because “You are texting about her and I’m not putting up with that.”

Before she knew it, the man switched with the insulting “creep.”

“(The Good Samaritan) encouraged me not to let that guy get to me and that everything was going to be fine.”

Savannah recognized the man for who he was.

“God saw me today. I told him that he was a blessing sent to me.”

When her story went viral, she found out the Good Samaritan was Chase who works for Whiskey Row in Nashville.
