Candace Owens CALLS for ban on Lia Thomas in women’s sports: “This has to stop now”

In a fervent and assertive declaration, commentator and activist Candace Owens has called for the disqualification of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas from women’s competitions, labeling the situation as a “breach of women’s rights.” This statement emerged amidst escalating controversy surrounding Thomas’ involvement in women’s swimming events, igniting a vigorous debate regarding inclusivity and fairness in athletics.

Lia Thomas, previously a member of the University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming team, garnered significant attention in 2022 when she transitioned to competing in women’s events following hormone therapy. Her rapid success in securing multiple national titles has created a rift within the sports community. Advocates for transgender rights have championed her participation, while critics contend that it affords her an unfair edge over female athletes.

This debate has rekindled a wider conversation about the necessity of revising participation regulations in sports to balance equal opportunity with competitive integrity. Candace Owens, a prominent figure within the conservative movement, has articulated a firm opposition to Thomas’ involvement, asserting that it constitutes an injustice to female athletes.

In a recent broadcast, Owens conveyed her indignation regarding what she perceives as a violation of women’s rights in the realm of sports. “This is unjust; it fundamentally undermines women’s rights,” Owens stated. “We have dedicated decades to advocating for equality in sports, ensuring women have equal opportunities, and now we are permitting men to compete in women’s events under the pretext of gender reassignment surgery, where they possess a distinct physical advantage. This must cease immediately.”

Owens emphasized that while she respects individuals’ rights to self-identify, she believes that competitive sports regulations must be revised to safeguard the integrity of women’s athletics. She also criticized sports governing bodies for what she perceives as yielding to political correctness instead of upholding fairness.

The situation surrounding Lia Thomas has emerged as a significant point of contention in the ongoing discussion regarding the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports. Despite her remarkable achievements, including victories at NCAA championships, Thomas has faced a mixed response characterized by both support and criticism. Advocates for Thomas contend that her involvement is a matter of fundamental rights and that the inclusion of transgender athletes is essential for achieving equality across all sectors, including athletics.

Conversely, an increasing number of voices, notably from female athletes such as Riley Gaines, an NCAA swimmer and activist, are advocating for a reassessment of existing regulations. Gaines has voiced her concerns regarding Thomas’ competitive edge, arguing that it creates an inequitable environment for biologically female athletes.

Comments made by Candace Owens have struck a chord with many proponents of women’s rights and female athletes, who assert that while Thomas’ transition is valid and personal, it should not confer a competitive advantage. One supporter of Owens articulated on social media, “Women have fought for years for a legitimate place in sports and today they are losing that place to people who are not biologically women.”

Nevertheless, Owens’ position has encountered significant backlash. Numerous advocates for transgender rights argue that the evolution of sports must prioritize inclusivity. A spokesperson for the LGBTQ+ organization Sports Equality remarked, “Excluding Lia Thomas from women’s competition is to deny her identity and set a dangerous precedent for transgender athletes.”

Owens’ appeal to prohibit Lia Thomas from participating in women’s sports arises at a pivotal moment for sports organizations. The NCAA and various international sports bodies are currently scrutinizing the issue of inclusivity in athletics, striving to reconcile the rights of transgender athletes with the imperative for fair competition.
