This Hit Song From 1958 Hit Is A Timeless Classic And It Only Has One Word

The Origin of “Tequila” by The Champs: A Surprising Story
Did you ever buy an album or cassette tape? If so, you know they had two sides. The first side, “Side A,” usually featured the most promising tracks, while “Side B” held songs with less airplay potential. Interestingly, Tequila by The Champs was originally placed on Side B as filler.

An Accidental Creation
During a 1957 recording session, Daniel Flores, The Champs’ saxophonist, spontaneously played a catchy Latin-infused riff. It caught everyone’s attention. The band immediately decided to build an entire song around this improvisation.

Naming the Song
While developing the song, they needed a name. Inspired by a recent trip to Tijuana, Mexico, where they enjoyed tequila, the band thought the lively vibe of the song fit the spirit of the beverage. They named it Tequila.

Instant Hit
Released in 1958, Tequila became an instant sensation. The song, punctuated by the word “Tequila” shouted three times, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks and won a Grammy.
